Turkey Tracks          talking turkey textshotgunshell

turkey line draw

Last year while turkey hunting with my friend, we had an unusual encounter with a young fox. We had found a ridge top where turkey sign was abundant, and had just started to call, hoping to raise a gobbler. Brent was “cutting” with a mouth call, and I was keeping a sharp ear and eye over the valley below.

As we worked together, the sound Brent was producing from the ridge top must have been very enticing. As I kept a close watch for a gobbler, I noticed a small young fox sneaking up the side of the hill, obviously hoping to catch a young hen that was longingly calling out for a mate.

He moved soundlessly, staying close to fallen logs and hiding under the laurels. He quickly made his way towards the sounds coming from Brent’s mouth call, moving stealthily as he got closer to what he hoped was going to be a tasty meal. Eventually, he made his way up to a fallen log, and all of a sudden lunged out ofhis hiding place looking for the hen. The little fox was within 5 feet of where Brent was set up, looking curiously about for his turkey. Suddenly, and without warning, Brent flapped his arms and nearly scared that poor fox to death! He bolted straight for the nearest blackberry thicket, and scurried for safety.

Just as easily as that fox was lured to the false calls of Brent, many of us are lured away from the truth. Often, the appeal of slick gimmicks and “religious fads” seem to pull some Christians away from the truth of God’s Word, and leave them empty, hungry, and feeling that there is something missing from the “packaged” philosophy of some teachings.

In an attempt to lure followers, or remain “politically correct”, many are adulterating the truth and “watering down” the message of salvation. The fact of the matter is that there is no substitute for the message of the Cross. Each of us must remain steadfast in the truth, following solid biblical principles and studying the Word on a consistent basis. Be on your guard, and realize this: “The method of presentation may vary, but the message remains unchanged.”

2 Timothy 4:3,4 – “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
